The BrAMS neuro-urology clinic was established jointly via collaboration between the MS neurologist Dr David Cottrell. Mr Marcus Drake Consultant Urologist with a specialist interest in neuro- urology and myself Carole Copestake MS Specialist Nurse. It has been successfully running since 2009.
The aim of this clinic is to provide MS patients with the highest standards of neuro-urological care, to train our MS speciality nurses with the latest interventions available and to facilitate research into new treatments for MS urological symptoms.
The urology team here at the BrAMS Centre consist of Mr Drake or his Registrar, Carole Copestake and Hannah Nelson (urology clinic coordinator). Referrals are made by either the MS consultants or MS nurses.
The urology clinic at the BrAMS Centre provides a unique service to patients with Multiple Sclerosis with urinary tract symptoms. It brings MS Neurology and MS Urology to one place. If further specialist investigations are required then further appointment can be arranged for patients to be seen at Southmead Hospital Urology department.
A newly referred patient is offered an appointment within 12 weeks.
What to expect at your appointment..
We ask that you arrive 15 minutes before your appointment and be ready to produce a urine sample on your arrival in the clinic.
An ultra sound scan of your bladder will be performed; an ultra sound scan is a painless test that uses sound waves to create images of your bladder.
If you have been provided with a frequency and volume chart you will be asked to bring this with you.
We ask that you bring with you a list of current medications including those prescribed by your GP, medicines that you have bought yourself or alternative medicines such as herbal remedies.
How long should I expect my appointment to last?
Your appointment with the Urologist and MS nurse will usually last up to 1 hour. At the end of the visit, most patients, will have received a diagnosis, and had their treatment, options discussed with them.
I believe this is an important addition to the services we provide at the BrAMS Centre.
